Abstract

Kauman settlement, located inside the complex of Kraton Yogyakarta (Palace of Yogyakarta) in Indonesia, is an urban village settlement offering a sanctuary peace and tranquillity in the midst of the hustle and bustle of urban Yogyakarta. The settlement is nearly three centuries old and over time has developed a new set of social norms of its residents while maintaining traditional Javanese and Islamic values. Since its establishment in 1775 to the present day, Kauman settlement has maintained its physical and non-physical originality.
