Public open space is one of the basic housing facilities, which must be provided by estate developers in Indonesia. The implementation of standard for public open space provision and design unvaryingly for all types of housing estates in Indonesia has resulted uniformity in the space design based on hierarchy and household size. In fact, there are significant changes of the characteristics of public open spaces from the initial design and occur in different economic groups. Such discrepancy demands for an exploration on the use of public open space in housing estates with various income levels. The research takes place in Yogyakarta for some reasons as this city provides housing in relatively small scale, is a melting pot of various interests, presently considered as the most comfortable city in Indonesia, chosen as the third most popular cities in Indonesia. This research aims to enrich the concepts that describe the use of public open spaces in upper-middle and lower-middle class housing in Yogyakarta, as well as the rationales underlying the use of the spaces. The reasearch utilizes multiple case study method in order to explore the use of public open space in 8 housing estates representing 4 upper-middle class housing and 4 lower-middle class housing in Yogyakarta. Two hundred forty four respondents that consist of residents, community leaders, workers, and visitors from 8 housing estates, as well as 11 developers’ staff from 4 companies are chosen as resource persons. There are 178 respondents (72 residents of upper-middle class housing and 106 residents of lower-middle class housing) were interviewed. Qualitative analysis was employed as the main method, whereas quantitative analysis was performed by statistical analysis, to corroborate as well as explaining the different angles of the qualitative results. The results showed that the theory and standard of public open space design on housing need to be modified because of the use of space dissimilarities in upper-middle and lower-middle class housing. The use of public open space was influenced by the neighbouring network factor and the quantity of the space requirements factor. Both factors influenced the public open spaces variance of uses in five areas: (1) the hierarchy of service, (2) the location of the highest rate of multifunctional space, (3) the facilities of space with the highest rate of multifunctional use, (4) the use of space for personal purposes, and (5) the use of space for trading activities. The uniqueness of public open space in housing estates in Yogyakarta is the public characteristic of most open spaces. The public characteristic is influenced by the awareness of the residents that the space is public property, as well as the strong sense of community and tolerance among the residents and the surrounding neighbourhood. Such condition reflects that there is the influence of most residents’ background as Javanese with tolerance and ‘guyub’ culture
