Abstract

At Trisakti University, Jakarta - Indonesia, the teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is based on the need of each faculty which aims to develop both reading and writing skills using language samples from content areas relating to the disciplines of each faculty. This method was originated with presumptions that the more specific the content of the language course the more motivated the learners would be. However, students’ enrolment in the ESP course does not necessarily represent their level of motivation in learning English. Their immediate needs to learn ESP resolved from their understanding on the importance of English for future careers which exemplified mostly from outside classroom. This study shows that students’ motivation will improve based on the awareness of the importance of English through the use of more appropriate materials to students needs and to their conditions accordingly. The students show improved and varied efforts in performing classroom tasks and exercises which represent increase on their level of motivation. As a result, students state that their level of integrative motivation is higher than their instrumental motivation because they realize that English is needed not only for job related or pragmatic reasons but also for more integrative reasons.
