At Trisakti University, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs are designed to facilitate content discipline by using language samples from each faculty to improve motivation in learning English. This was the original intention when compulsory ESP was first implemented within this university. However, this practice does not immediately engage students in learning ESP in that they understand the importance of English for their future careers. The students did not understand how they should use English for their immediate needs. This paper reports on how ESP teachers and content teachers work collaboratively in the form of designing students’ needs and materials as well as introducing new teaching methodology. This collaborative work between ESP teachers and content teachers in dealing with students’ needs and materials affects students’ engagement in learning ESP. This engagement is the representation of students’ interest in learning ESP as they show a lot of work in the classroom as well as outside classroom related to their tasks. The interest of the students represents improvement in terms of motivation, which has influenced students’ efforts in completing tasks and exercises assigned by ESP teachers. To support the thesis there are several interview sessions, which have been administered in gathering initial information from the students and teachers and an open-ended questionnaire administered to the students to gather information after the intervention in the form of syllabus and materials changed. This study as a part of an action research project conducted at this university was meant to improve ESP teaching and learning situation. The result of this study shows that teachers’ collaboration in compulsory ESP has resulted improvement in student motivation to study ESP. The collaboration between ESP and content teachers are not the usual practice at this university; however, the collaboration in this study proved that when teachers can collaboratively work in ESP, the students could perform well in their ESP classes.
